Anne Frank's diary - Jewish children in the holocaust had very
little possessions as they were either in hiding or in the concentration camps.
Anne Frank was in hiding for 2 years and her most beloved possession was her
diary. She confided in her diary regularly and it was a way of pouring out her
emotions of the constant fear and challenges faced while in hiding. The diary is important to all children who were going through the holocaust as it is a first person view of what it was like as a child growing up in severe conditions. The diary reflects the challenges she faced growing up in hiding and how she grew as a person.
Star of David - the star of David was a way for people to know that someone was a Jew or not. All Jews had to wear the Star of David or otherwise they would face serious penalties if they were caught without the star on. During the war Germans grabbed Jews off the street and took them to concentration camps. The yellow star, inscribed with the word "Jude," had become a symbol of Nazi persecution. The oppression and labeling of the Jews by use of the Jewish badge did not begin until after the start of the Second World War.
Striped Pyjamas - the striped pyjamas were the clothes the Jews wore in concentration camps. It is a symbol of the destruction and death that the many Jew's faced during the holocaust. These were the clothes that the children wore during that time and if I can replicate them then it would be a good artefact to have. I would talk about the horrific things that the children were put through during the concentration camps and the terrible ways they were killed.
Poster - Behind the artefacts I would have a poster with information about hiding during the concentration camps and what it is like for children. The poster would also include pictures during that time.
